You know, one thing about being an Alaska Engagement Photographer is that the weather is always a contender. Maybe it goes without saying but it is really important to me that I provide my clients with photos that they will truly love. I don’t mean photos that they will just like or feel okay about…I want people to freaking love their photos. So, when I woke up on the morning of Kirsten & Dan’s engagement session and saw that it was blowing sleet/snow and the view was completely socked in, I did what happens to me every time: I called to see if they wanted to reschedule. I suggested that if they had time later in the week (they were visiting from Baltimore) we might want to try a different day. When this happens I always wonder…well, what if the weather is WORSE when we reschedule? It is a real possibility around here! However one of the best things about engagement sessions is that unlike a wedding day we usually have some flexibility. I can (and do)  in any kind of weather, but in this case I was so glad that we were able to wait for the sunshine. When I scroll through these photos I feel confident that Kirsten and Dan will love them. Because we had a gorgeous day and because they *brought* it. Nice job, Baltimore! I like your people. Are you planning on contacting an Alaska Engagement Photographer?
Here are my top 3 Tips:
1. Location, Location, Location. A lot of my couples are from out of state and I have a huge range of favorite locations that I can suggest based on what type of backdrop people are hoping for. However, for my locals, I love it when they choose an area that is meaningful to them. Whether it is one of their favorite viewpoints or hikes, or the part of town where they got engaged, if it is meaningful it is going to be extra beautiful.
2. It is ALL about the Light (subtext: so you might have to be a little flexible). Whenever possible I make sure to plan my shoots around the best light of the day…even in Alaska when sometimes that means starting a shoot at 11pm – are you up for that?? However, this also means that flexibility is key. Sometimes it ends up being a cloudy day and you need to start earlier than planned, sometimes you’re going to get a gorgeous sunset if you start an hour later. Sometimes, its sunny north of Anchorage and socked in to the south. If you can chase the beautiful light, I promise you will not regret it!
3. Know yourself…and allow your photographer to know you. Do you want to hike? Do you want to go on a date and have it photographed? Do you want to be oh so fancy? Are you terrible at fashion?? (you can ask for help with that!) If you can have a conversation with your photographer about what you are hoping for in your photos, and who you are as a couple, it will really go a long way towards loving the end result.
