I was shooting a wedding in Lake Geneva this summer…it was during the reception and I was standing off to the side of the dance floor when I was approached by a male guest. I could tell that he had gone out of his way to come and talk to me, so I was pretty curious to see what he would have to say.
And, this is what he said:
“You know, you have such a beautiful smile…but your glasses – they’re not right for your face.”
Really? Really?! That’s what he crossed the room to tell me? What do you say to that?!
Even now I wonder…is it true?! Are my glasses all wrong for my face and this kind stranger was just trying to be helpful? I analyze my face in the mirror a lot more now, when I put those frames on. Thanks a lot, Mr. Guest…
I have two pairs of glasses:
The ones I was wearing at the time were the ones on the left, the metal top-frames…and they’re also the ones I choose to wear most often (because I kind of think that the other frames are the ones that don’t quite suit my face…)
The morals of my story:
Guests say funny things to the wedding photographer sometimes…and I kind of love it – keeps life interesting, at least.
You shouldn’t sandwich your critiques with a compliment. It makes the compliment seem way fake.
PS My blog is in the midst of a re-design…sorry it’s looking a little disheveled for now. Very soon I’ll have a brand new website and a completed blog redesign to share – cannot wait!
“You have a beautiful smile but…”
