I’ve been thinking about how so many portrait sessions are over the top posed/staged, to the point where you somehow lose the real nature of the people being photographed. I thought it would be fun to try doing some portrait sessions where I take myself out of the equation as much as possible, where I come in to someone’s everyday life and purely document…still with the goal of creating beautiful images, but real instead of posed.

My friends Shelley & Corey agreed to let me come to their house for a couple hours and try this idea out. I told them that I wanted them to do the normal things that they would do as a family on a Saturday morning, to let the boys play, and not to worry about the camera.

I absolutely love the end result because I feel like I’m able to give the Mason family a little time capsule of their life at this place and time…that seems like something that you could cherish for years to come. I like to imagine that someday Miles & Salem might look at these pictures and get a real sense of what their home looked like, and what personalities they had as little boys (and these two definitely do not lack for personality!)
