A few years ago my father in law handed me a book called “If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name: News From Small-Town Alaska” By Heather Lende. I think he knows that I listen to NPR and enjoy hearing people’s stories so he thought I would enjoy this book. I absolutely LOVED Heather’s perspective on Haines living and thought that someday I’d like to visit this quirky small town. It was in 2016 when Susie approached me about the possibility of photographing she and Matt’s wedding in Haines. I tried not to sound overly excited about it in case I might scare her off…but I knew that I needed to be the one to photograph this day. Haines Wedding Photographer
I breezed in and out in about 48 hours but it was enough to hook me. My Airbnb host Fuzzy has lived in Haines for many years. She cooked me breakfast, drove me around a bit and told me where some of her favorite spots were. I intentionally didn’t rent a car which forced me to walk a lot and also to connect with more people than I otherwise would have. My whole experience of Haines only convinced me to come back and bring my family next time, for a (hopefully) sunny weekend of camping in the forest, next to the ocean.
